EVERTON F.C
Athletic News - Tuesday 03 July 1888
The Everton F.C., have for next season secured “Tag” Hay, of Halliwell, and Harry Wharmby, the Derby county centre-half back.  They are also in communication with several other first-class men, and the following have already signed; - G. Dobson, A. Dick, A. Gibson, D. Waugh, G. Farmer, T. Costley, H. Warmby, W. Briscoe, C. Joliffe, and “Tag” Hay.  Messrs Jones, half-back and R. Watson, forward, will also play for them during the coming season.

Is it true H. Warmby, the Derby County centre half-back, has gone over to Everton?

The rumours that Hay, of Halliwell, had joined Everton was rather premature, for he had already signed for Halliwell, and they refuse to release him.  By the way, I fancy Mr. Nisbet deserves a little credit for the future Everton team, seeing that he had secured all the lot, with one exception, before he was so unceremoniously chucked.

Mr. Barclay, the hon, secretary of the Everton Club, has just issued his list of fixtures, and it is a very formidable one, too.  He is evidently doing the thing properly, and has sent a circular to each member of the club asking their support in many ways.
Mr. W.E Barclay, hon, sec of the Everton F.C., has issued a gentlemanly and business-like circular to the supporters of the club.  Already fixtures have been concluded with Renton, Cambuslang, and Third Lanark, and it is gratifying to learn that strong efforts are being made to strengthened the reserve, so that the habitues of the Anfield enclosure will always have an attractive home fixture.

The Blackburn Rovers thought they had the two Chadwick all right when they promised to play next season, but Everton were on the job, and secured their signatures as pros.  They were amateurs last season, and promised the Rovers to continue with them on the same footing.  Promises made by amateurs are occasionally liable to be broken.
I understand that Everton were also after Townley.  I should not think they have been successful unless, however, they can provide him with a school, though they seem able to find almost any sort of work for good football players.
There is one thing certain, the Anfield Road contingent will be bad to beat; and with Andy Watson giving up, Holt at Everton- if the Lancashire F.A take kindly to his peculiarities-Frank woods a doubtful starter, and Job Wilding gone back to Wrexham, Bootle will have to strengthen their ranks a bit.
The Everton people were determined to have more than four blades of grass on their ground, and have wasted any amount of hay seeds, with the result that they now want tenders for the grass,  No one would have thought that it was possible who saw the brown, bare patch of land at the end of the season.

The Everton club did not make much fuss about being excluded from the eighteen.  It didn’t take them many minutes to arrive at a decision –to scratch.  They think, and very properly so too, that there is more to be made out of eleven ordinary fixtures than the somewhat problematic number of cup ties they could get through.
