CAMERON
Athletic News -Monday 6 August 1895
Cameron, the Queen’s Park centre forward, has not yet arrived in Liverpool, but it is quite expected he will do so before the season starts. He is a lucky find for the Everton club. J. Holt still withholds his signature, but it would be exceedingly foolish if such a clever player had to stand aloof from the game. The new directors of the Everton club are, we are pleased to hear, working very well together, and the raising of the £6,000 to complete the purchase of the ground is apparently a very easy matter. The club with their generous support have a great future, and the team they are ready to place on the field in quite up to the standard.

There is no truth in the report circulated that J. Holt has signed on for the ensuing season with the Everton Club.

THE PURCHASE OF THE EVERTON FOOTBALL GROUND
The Liverpool Daily Post- Tuesday, August 13, 1895
A SATISFACTORY “DEAL”
The Liverpool football public generally will be delighted to learn that the directors of the Everton Football Club have successfully negotiated the purchase of the ground at Goodison Park, the completion of the business being finally arranged at noon yesterday. For some time past rumours have been cast about that the directors had been unable to raise money by mortgage on the ground, or at any rate that they had approached several financiers for that purpose, and that they could not effect a deal at all serviceable to their requirements. Be that as it may, we are able to inform those who circulated the silly reports that a mortgage of £6,000 has been obtained, and signed, sealed, and delivered most satisfactorily for the club; and that, furthermore, the directors have paid down in each an additional £1,000 to the one previously made by the old board of directors when negotiations were first arranged for the purchases of Goodison Park by the club, and that the whole business has now been completed. The new directors and shareholders will therefore enter with a light heart on the forthcoming season’s campaign. Everything is working amicably in the “inner circle,” and there is every hope that the club and players will at least do as well as they did last year. The players have arrived on the scene of action in good trim, and are very actively engaged in training operations.

PURCHASE OF THE EVERTON FOOTBALL GROUND
The Liverpool Daily Post-Thursday, August 15, 1895
TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY POST
Sir- Under the above heading you notify a satisfactory sale of Goodison park. Fifty years ago, when the site of the famous football ground was an open common, I was on it with my father, an Old Waltonian,, gathering wild fruit, when he told me the place was common land belonging to the parishioners of Walton, that no one else had any right to it, but one or two would like to claim it. Can you or any of your readers say if the park was during this century Commons’ land, and if so, by what law or right it was sold to the football club or anyone else? Yours &c., J. Roltyat.

EVERTON PRACTICE MATCH
The Liverpool Mercury- Tuesday, August 20, 1895
The approaches to the Everton ground last evening presented the usual lively aspect which marks even the height of the football season, and on the arrival at headquarters at 6.30 there would be fully 10,000 persons persons present -a number which considerably increased as time wore on-to witness the preliminary practice game. Strong sides were chosen, and from a glance at the following list of players it will be seen that the talent was fairly well distributed. Blues; Hillman, goal; Kelso and Arridge, backs; Goldie, Boyle, and Stewart, half-backs; Williams, McInnes, Hill, Flewitt, and Murray, forwards. White; Cook, goal; McDonald, and Parry, backs; Storrier, Meiklejohn, and Elliott, half-backs; Reay, Bell, Hartley, Chadwick, and Milward, forwards. Despite the oppressive heat the teams got to work in brisk fashion and put in many fine touches of play, which culminated in Chadwick scoring for the Whites after the game had been in progress for a quarter of an hour. This was followed by another from Hartley, the result of a brilliant individual effort, and this constituted the whole of the scoring during the 70 minutes play’, the Whites winning by 2 goals to nil. The men acquitted themselves exceptionally well considering the nature of the attendant circumstances, and the majority. Of them appeared to be in fairly good condition. Of course, interest was mainly centred on the performances of the new recruits to the ranks, but there should be no cause for anxiety in this respect as all did well, and when the serious work of the season commences a selected eleven from the teams that did duty last evening should give an excellent account of themselves. The next practice game takes place on Saturday next, when a start will be made at four p.m. Many rumours have been circulated concerning the settlement of Holt’s destination for the season. He has not signed on for Everton and so far is not attached to any club.

EVERTON FOOTBALL CLUB
The Liverpool Daily Post, Tuesday August 20, 1895
The first practice match of the above club took place last evening at the Goodison Park enclosure, before a large and interested crowd of spectators, numbering between 12,000 and 14,000. That available strength of the premier club was divided in such a manner as to give a good display of football the accepted first team forwards being pitted against the first team defence. The names of the opposing teams were as follow; Blues; Hillman, goal; Kelso and Arridge, full backs; Goldie, Boyle (captain), and Stewart, half-backs; Williams, McInnes, Hill, Flewitt, and Murray, forwards. Whites; Cook, goal; McDonald and Parry, backs; Storrier, Meiklejohn, and Elliott, half backs; Reay, Bell, Hartley, Chadwick, and Milward, forwards. More than ordinary interest was centred in the performance of the new men, Flewitt, Meiklejohn, and Goldie, and each of them can be said to have passed their initial stage with success. Parry appears to be on the fleshy side, whilst the shooting of the accepted first eleven forwards was not be any means up to their usual high standard, but no doubt this shortcoming, if it can be termed such at such an early period of the year, will be easily remedied, and the Liverpool public will see their favourities in full going order at the commencement of the season proper. Many remarks were passed on the absence of Holt-the inimitable -and his familiar figure would be heartily welcomed. Reay, the exceedingly clever outside right, and Latta’s real deputy, did not turn out for the second half, and it is to be hoped his knee had not given again. The members stand has been enlarged, and thereby a cause of grievance has been removed, thus showing the inclination of the directorate to give every advantage and privilege to their shareholders. The next practice is down for Saturday next, at about 4.30.

BLUES 0 WHITES
4 August 26 1895. The Liverpool Mercury
The Everton Club turned out two elevens for a practice game on Saturday, before a large and enthusiasts crowd. The usual arrangements of playing the strongest forwards team on one side against the strongest defence on the other was adopted and a very pleasant and fairly fast game resulted. The Whites forward team comprising Latta, Bell, Hartley, Chadwick, and Milward, was a very smart lot, and worked nicely together. Four goals resulted from their efforts and Hillman, the blue goalkeeper, seemed to have no chance, the shot that scored. He however, brought off two or three very fine saves. Notably from Bell and Hartley. The latter appears to be in very good form at present, his speed in some instance bring exceptions. The Blue half backs and backs were Goldie, Storrier, Stewart, Adams Arridge and all played very creditably, the first named being undoubtedly as acquisition of the Blue forwards McInnes stood out prominently, and was very fast and tricky. A very much improved player in McDonald, the young back who was signed on last season. All the men seemed to have improved vastly since the first public game, but one or two of them still require to lose a little fresh. Today the club holds its annual picnic and sports at freshfields. Teams Blues: - Hillman, goal, Adams, and Arridges, backs, Gokdie, Storrier, and Stewart, halfbacks, Williams, McInnes, Reay, Flewitt, and Murray forwards. Whites: - Cook, goal, McDonald, and Parry, backs Kelso, Meiklehjohn, and Elliott, halfbacks, Latta, Bell, Hartley, Chadwick and Milward forwards .

A start was made shortly before noon from the Spellow House Hotel, a party of from 60 to 70 players Stewarts and officials of the club having assembled.
